The Problem
Tracheal intubation is one of the most common procedures in U.S. hospitals, performed an estimated 9 million patients a year. Clinicians have to hold a reliable seal while fighting leaks and shifting tubes, and in practice 72% of patients sit at unsafe cuff pressures and 57% face some form of tracheal complication. In long-term intubation (48 hours or more), that raises the risk of tracheal wall injury and aspiration.

Cuffs are staticThe trachea constantly expands and contracts, so holding a seal means setting pressure high enough for the airway at its widest. That sustained high pressure creates hotspots that damage tissue over time.
